For young and young at heart alike, the art of magic entertains
and fascinates. We watch, intrigued, as magicians lure us in to
their hocus pocus with everything from simple magic tricks to grand
illusions. From beginners' magic kits with standard assortments
of tricks, all the way to magnificent stage illusions such as the
ZigZag cabinet or a recreation of the famous Harry Houdini escape
"Metamorphosis", we're entranced as we watch magicians
ply their craft.
Magic is an ancient art, going back to the time of the Pharaohs
of Egypt at least. Magicians were important parts of the king's
court in medieval times, and in 19th century America were very popular
in traveling shows throughout the country. The popularity of magic
has only increased over time, and today there are some magicians
who are both rich and famous. For example, David Copperfield has
had many TV specials since 1978, is a regular performer on stages
worldwide, and has perhaps achieved financial and critical success
like no other magician in history.
Anyone who has seen the TV shows featuring the street magic of
David Blaine knows it doesn't take stage illusions to baffle us
though. From apparently simple card tricks to his amazing levitation,
Blaine has held small audiences on the street as spellbound as his
fellow performers in the largest theaters.
The great magicians of the past, present, and the future all have
one thing in common. Magic is really about entertainment, and that
usually takes either of two forms. Some magicians perform in an
air of grand suspense, drama, and mystery, while others feature
comedy. In fact, many of today's famous comedic magicians like Penn
& Teller feature as much or more comedy than magic in their
shows!
Whatever the style, whatever the setting, magic has a near-universal
appeal, in any language. And the great thing is, anyone who wants
to join this long line of great magicians can do so with just a
few common household objects, a little practice, and, don't tell,
a little secret knowledge which you'll find right here!
